Angkor Wat impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as delicate artistry of its carvings. Approaching temple, first walk across vast moat, and continue along a broad causeway lined with Naga balustrades. As you enter main building, ascend through a series of galleries and courtyard before reaching central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over causeway and across surrounding countryside. On the way, stop to enjoy intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface, with some 1,700 Apsaras, or celestial dancers, sculpted into walls. Along outer gallery walls run longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology, including famous churning of the Ocean of Milk. It is stunning at any time of the day including sunrise and sunset time, especially to watch the play of light on the stones. Afternoon visit a fortified city of Angkor Thom covers an area of 9 square km enclosed by a wall surrounded by wide man-made moat, city includes many of Angkor most popular sites. Entering by monumental South gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, each carrying a giant naga. Continue to terrace of Elephants and terrace of Leper king, former spaces for public ceremonies, both adorned with dramatic bas-relief, Baphuon, royal enclosure, Phimean Akas, and mysterious Bayon temple. In this temple, one of the most popular with smiling faces and compelling in Angkor area, explore galleries of beautifully well preserved bas-relief and ascend narrow stairs to reach central sanctuary, where you will find giant stone smiling faces enigmatically down at you from every angle.
